Activities No other county in England has so many miles of quiet, virtually traffic-free by-roads. It is possible to use this network of ancient lanes, inherited from Saxon times, to cycle all over Herefordshire and hardly ever encounter a main road. This go-as-you-please, environmentally friendly way to shrug off the pace of modern life and really see the countryside is finding increasing popularity. There are routes to suit all tastes: everything from a leisurely pedal along flat country lanes to serious mountain-biking in the hills and forests. The River Wye is one of the foremost canoeing rivers in the country. Between Hay and Chepstow there are 100 miles of canoeing river, flowing through the countryside, the historic city of Herford and market towns of Ross and Monmouth. Whitewater canoeists, rock climbers and abseilers will find plenty of opportunities to challenge their skills in the Wye Gorge downstream from Symonds Yat. Horse riding, ballooning and go-karting are all readily available to visitors. Herefordshire has superb golf-courses which welcome visiting players. For walkers, every taste is catered for, from quiet riverside or woodland strolls to a complete walking holiday. The Wye Valley Walk runs right through Herefordshire: Offa's Dyke Path keeps to the higher western side, taking in the Black Mountains and Hergest Ridge. The Wye is taken seriously by anglers of all kinds. Throughout its length it is England's greatest salmon fishery. It is also outstanding for coarse fishing, especially around Ross-on-Wye and for trout and grayling higher up. Herefordshire is the ideal destination for garden lovers having a very favourable climate, rich fertile soil and unspoiled landscapes. Protected by the mountains of Wales to the west and The Malvern Hills to the east it is easy to see why so many gardens thrive. From the grand and formal to the informal and small, intimate gardens countywide, there are also many National and Specialist Collections (including Clematis, Michaelmas Daisies, Acer and Betula).
