Castles in Herefordshire For many centuries Herefordshire was frontier territory: a heavily defended and frequently disputed land between Norman England and Celtic Wales. The great border castles are the most enduring relic of these turbulent times. Goodrich Castle (English Heritage) towers over the Wye Valley and is the best preserved borderland stronghold, still impressive despite its Civil War battering. Longtown, Grosmont and Skenfrith defended the semi-independent territory of Archenfield in hilly southwest Herefordshire. Eastnor Castle stands in magnificent grounds on the lower slopes of the Malvern Hills. Visitors see a series of superb rooms as this is the ideal realisation of a medieval fantasy castle, built in the early 19 th century.
